MAASive at ICE/IEEE ITMC: Advancing Resilient and Service-Oriented Manufacturing

The MAASive project – Manufacturing-as-a-Service for Industrial Value Enhancement – played a central role in the Special Session titled "Manufacturing-as-a-Service (MaaS) and Smart Manufacturing Networks: A New Era of Supply Chain Resilience", held during the ICE/IEEE ITMC Conference, in Valencia, Spain (June 16-18, 2025).

The session, chaired by Maria Jose Nuñez Ariño (AIDIMME Technology Institute), brought together key speakers from leading European projects in digital and resilient manufacturing:

  • Sergio Gusmeroli (Politecnico di Milano), representing the MAASive project

  • Bruno Puzzolante, presenting on behalf of the M4ESTRO project

  • Armand Baboli (INSA Lyon), who co-presented the NARRATE project with Maria José

The discussion focused on how the Manufacturing-as-a-Service (MaaS) paradigm can strengthen supply chain adaptability, sustainability, and circularity, especially in the face of disruptions. Speakers explored how MaaS can serve as a strategic enabler for:

  • improving responsiveness and agility in supply chains,

  • supporting decentralized and smart manufacturing networks,

  • integrating shared services and digital tools for collaborative production.

The MAASive project, funded under Horizon Europe, aims to lay the foundations of a federated Manufacturing-as-a-Service (MaaS) ecosystem, where production capabilities are shared, priced, and delivered as services. By developing enabling architectures, business models, and operational tools, MAASive supports a transition toward more flexible, resilient, and circular European manufacturing.

During the session, MAASive presented its approach to intelligent and resilient manufacturing ecosystems enabled by servitization. The focus was on designing MaaS platforms that integrate risk detection, supply chain simulation, and dynamic orchestration — essential functions for enhancing supply chain resilience.

Events like this highlight the growing momentum around MaaS and reinforce the value of EU-funded research in shaping the future of service-oriented and sustainable manufacturing.
